Meet UNCOMMON SOUND

UNCOMMON SOUND was created by Cordeone and performs as a full ensemble comprised of the accordion, drums, bass, horns, and electric guitar.

This solid band brings together a wealth of experience and musical ingenuity, creating a broader sound that is both new and familiar.

Drawing inspiration from Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, Fado, Kompa, Brazilian and French music, the group introduces its main instrument, the accordion, as one of the most versatile and adaptable musical tools on the market. Traditionally used in folk and gypsy music, Cordeone aims to surprise audiences with the endless possibilities and rich melodies it produces, inviting the public to get lost in the musical mash the group creates.

UNCOMMON SOUND has had the pleasure of performing at Lincoln Center, Rockwood Music Hall, The Groove, Nublu, Zinc, Shrine, Ginny’s Super Club, Club Bonafide, Barbes, and more.

Get to Know UNCOMMON SOUND

CORDEONE

began his musical career at the age of 9, first mastering the accordion. He is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, who’s learned to adapt his instruments to various musical styles. Cordeone has had the pleasure of collaborating with Jah Mason, Turbulence, Norrisman, Big Joe Turner and his Memphis Blues Caravan, Ben l'oncle Soul, and many others. He’s released three albums, Vida, Miss Erzulie, and most recently Uma História Simples and is currently completing the UnCommon Sound debut album.

The artist is also a polyglot, speaking French, English, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Haitian Creole, and more. Cordeone has performed internationally and locally at festivals and venues such as Festival Terre du Son (France), The Pan-African Space Station Festival (South Africa), Lincoln Center (NY-USA), 92Y ((NY-USA), and more.

Cordeone is the recipient of the 2019 Best Fado Album for Uma Historia Simples at the International Portuguese Music Awards (IPMAs), and was awarded 2019 Best Solo Vocals at the Made In Jazz New York Festival.

 

Roberto ROBINSON

is a gifted drummer who travels the world performing with JT Taylor (lead singer of Kool and The Gand) since 2012. Born in Brooklyn, NY on August 4th 1987, Roberto’s biggest dream as a child was to play the drums. He started out playing in the church and gradually expanded to playing in local clubs and casinos.


To date, Roberto has played with numerous bands, such as: James Hall and the Voices of Citadel, James Hall and worship Praise New Era, Christopher Williams from New Jack City, Che’Nelle Universal Music, Japan. He also plays in local clubs such as The Groove, The Village Underground and Resorts World Casino, among others. Despite his busy schedule, he finds it important to give back to his community by participating in youth summer camp as a drum instructor.

 

Shelley SHELLZ

is a multi-instrumentalist from New York. Raised in a musical household, he drew his talent from his Mother, a piano teacher, and his father, a violinist, in a home where music was not constrained by pop culture. He started his journey on the piano, then moved on to the drums, before settling on the bass and making it his own.

A graduate of Five Towns College on Long Island, New York, the likes of Jaco Pastorius, Sting, and Thundercat heavily influenced his musical signature. Performing throughout New York City, Shellz regularly collaborates with fellow alumna Jordan King, among others.

He is currently putting the bones on his debut album, with a release date TBD.

 

Marcos ROBINSON

is a native Brooklynite raised by a God-fearing family, whose musical roots stem from Gospel music. At the age of 14, his Mother gave him a starter guitar kit and he began taking lessons right away. He continued his studies in music through the years, and in 2016 earned his BFA from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

Throughout the years, Marcos found inspiration in the likes of guitarists such as John Scofield, John Mayer and Jonathan DuBos.

He has had the pleasure of performing with a variety of reputable artists, including: Bebe Winans, Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland, Mario and Lloyd, to name a few. Marcos has also recorded with artists such as Le’Andria Johnson, Doobie Powell and Naomi Raine. He is currently the guitarist for pianist/organist Matthew Whitaker.

Dominique GAGNÉ

is a flutist, pianist and composer currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Hailing from New Hampshire, Dominique is a full-time musician dividing her time between performing and touring with bands both nationally and internationally, and teaching at Little Orchestra Society and 92nd St Y. She holds a Bachelors in Music Education from Oberlin Conservatory, a Masters in Jazz Composition and Arranging from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, as well as a Masters in Studio Jazz Writing from the Frost School at the University of Miami.

Dominique enjoys bringing together traditional dance-based musical genres with world music and jazz. She recently toured with Casuarina, a samba band from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and her work has been featured in multiple NY and Vermont-based artist’s albums. She speaks English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Indonesian. Dominique’s second album is to be released in 2021.

Rachel THERRIEN

is a French-Canadian trumpeter, living and working between New York City and Montreal. An accomplished musician, composer, and producer, Rachel has released 5 albums and is the winner of multiple awards, including the 2015 TD Grand Prize Jazz Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the 2016 Stingray Jazz Rising Star Award, and nomination as Best Jazz Producer at the IMA’s 2018 Award.

Rachel has toured locally and globally, and is a key player in the Jazz scene of Montreal. She holds a B.A. in Jazz Performance from the University of Montreal, as well as a degree in Arts Management and Certification from Instituto Supérior de Arte (Havana, Cuba). Rachel believes that Jazz is a philosophy of conversation between musicians from different backgrounds, and holds that ideal at the core in her work.
